What a lot of work we accomplished today! Were there some aha moments for you? We practiced our peer editing skills to help our classmates move their response writing skills forward. We also practiced self assessing by using feedback from the teacher to identify areas we need to work on in persuasive writes. Then we thought about how we can make these improvements. Socials: Poverty is a huge topic. Today we watched part of a thought provoking video called Poor No More. See below if you wish to watch it again. POST some of the ideas from the video that strongly affected you. Also some of you have been playing the game SPENT to get an idea of how tough it is to make ends meet sometimes. Wow. I just finished playing that spent game. A lot of the choices you make like skipping your child's play were some good choices. You need the $50 from that neighbour! I made it through the game to day 30 with only $1 left. Talk about a close call huh. It was kind of stressfull but it gives you an idea of the crisis some people are going through. The point of the game is to put you in situations that we neccesarily wouldn't go through everyday (for most of us). It was kind of challenging but really makes you think about how depressing it would be to be in that persons situation. Some parts of the video that really affected me was when the lady found out that she had breast cancer on the day of her daughter's 16th birthday. She had to go off work but she had to go back soon because she had bills to pay and she wasnt getting any income while off her job. And then when the lady goes in to tell her boss about what happened to one of his workers. That man is just sick! He didn't care wether his employee was on the verge of death or had a cold! He is just a jerk. Who would do that to someone?! And then he just pushes her out after telling him. Wow. People are just heartless sometimes. The part where the governmental groups cut taxes by 100$ billion and the government collects 233$ billion per year. If that governmental group hadn't cut the tax pay then the government would be collecting $333 billion dollars. With that money they could spend it on child shelters, medical help, etc. THEY JUST NEED TO TRY AND DO SOMETHING RATHER THAN SITTING THERE AND WATCHING THEIR PEOPLE DIE! This stuff just enrages me with their behaviour! What would you do if you saw them? I would give them a speech like the girl who silenced the world. But of course they don't care do they. They have the higher power and we are just their little people that they can control. Quote of the day: "Music to me is the air that I breathe, it's the blood that pumps through my veins that keeps me alive."~ Billie Joe Armstrong. Can't wait for BURP it up tomorrow!

Something that affected me was the single mom with the two kids and how she was having such a hard time getting money. Also when the daughter read out the card she made for her mom, it made me feel really sad for that family.

The spent game is actually a really good game to experience what its like to be living in poverty. Their were some tough choices about the stress and the hunger. Especially the grocery one. Luckily my mom knows what to buy that is worth. You have to think really carefully in the game. What affected me is the lady Melinda, who had 3 kids. She said that the women who was running their file, she said that the women treated them like dirt. Its quite sad because she had those 3 beautiful kids and she has to sacrafise her food to her kids in order to not grow with hunger. Also, the part where the girl who made a card for her mommy cause she saw her crying was really sad. I dont really know how to explain how sad it was and touching. Even with the part where the workers got sent off and their job was closed. Without leaving a notice. Or telling specificly why, or even an apology! Going back to the game, its funny though. I thought that I could solve my childs problem (in the game) and that she/he does'nt need a tutor but when they asked if I can solve the problem. I DID NOT KNOW A THING. I was thinking "I wish I could go back" because sometimes the reason when children grow up live in poverty is maybe because they didn't study. So if I gave my child (in the game) a tutor she would've been a teacher when she grew up, and maybe just maybe have a good life.

The game was really hard to play because you would have to balance all the problems.

I noticed that the video covered a lot of information that exist, but no one wants to hear. I had an aha moment when I saw the part with the daughter and the mother. They were getting sick, but work was not giving them benefits. I guess even in a society like this, social levels can be very easy to notice.

i felt so sad when that mom with the three kids and husband when to the place to give them free money (I forget what it is called) told them to take all the money out of the bank and spent that, then sell your car. If you do those things it would give you an ever high chance of being in poverty. at the part when she had to give her kids away made me so angry and sad i felt so sorry for that family and i am so happy and grateful to be living like this.

The little girl didn't seem to understand what her mum was going thru and she made her a card I thought it was pretty sad if I were in her shoes I would be wondering alot.

One of the thing that I see as a problem is companies skipping town with no notice of leaving. Like if say my dad showed up at work and there was nothing there. It effects families that only have one out of two parents working. Now there in poverty.
