You are all geniuses! Today we started our genius hour projects. Some of you still need to fill in the form telling me what your question is. Please do this immediately. (see form on May 14th HW blog.) We are off to a good start with everything from writing our own songs to taking apart a computer. Tomorrow I will put a planning form on the class site for you to complete, so do some thinking about your next steps: what materials do you need? what questions do you need answered? who can answer these questions? what other support materials or people do you need? what are you planning to do for next class? Your reading responses are due tomorrow and hand in your novel as well. PE so bring gym strip. Here is the Space Oddity by Commander Chris Hadfield. How amazing is this! Genius Hour: We brainstormed our Learning Intention and our web class blog name today. Although we still need to improve our group brainstorming work ethic, I was very impressed by the contributions when deciding on our Learning Intention. Thank you for your participation. It reads: I can explore and demonstrate passion using my creativity and imagination. Put this on your new blog page which should be on your personal weebly site. You are also to begin blog #1 and talk about your ideas, questions and what some of your struggles or hesitations are. Math: In your math journals on the next page after your measurement unit, begin title page for your integers unit and add notes (definitions and examples) that we practiced and wrote in our exercise books off the board today. Tell us what you are thinking for your genius hour project and ask any questions that you have. I will do my best to answer and on Monday we will spend some time on individual plans so we are ready to begin our projects next week. Set up a 'genius hour' page on your website and start blogging about your thoughts. Start with 'what is a genius?' See the video clip on yesterday's site if you want to see what some grade 6/7's have already done in another school. Reading: Final response is due next Thursday. Science: Take a look at the Bill Nye video on space exploration and add to your notes. Those who shared today have additional research to do. So... tomorrow you are starting to plan out your genius hour projects. This idea is being explored by a number of teachers around the district and continent. It is even explored in the workplace. An author and expert on passion based learning, Dan Pink, stated that employees in one workplace took 60 minutes each week to work on new ideas or master new skills. How cool is that! So you will develop your own inquiry question about whatever it is you want to explore. I suggest you view your passion project animoto tonight and review what you chose as your passions and sentence then. Be prepared tomorrow to choose a topic for your genius project...an area that is your passion or that interests you...one that you wish to become more knowledgeable or skilled at. This is an opportunity to learn what you want. Watch below to see some examples of what some students from a grade 6/7 class, Gallit Zvi's class, in Surrey are doing. You also have science to work on. You need to do more research to add to your initial questions on Extreme Environments. We will continue to share our answers from yesterday's field trip and next week will be preparing for a unit test.
Be sure to check out the other 6/7 reading blogs 'book clubs' and add your opinions to theirs. This should help you prepare for your final written response. Continue with your reading ...blogging with group, asking deeper questions, using stickies to jot your ideas, important quotes and character traits.
