Here is a picture of the real Ivan in the circus mall. It is time you knew the real Ivan. See below to hear a bit more about how the author was motivated into writing about this gorilla.
This is Ivan and Burma, two baby gorillas purchased by E.L. Irwin, the owner of the B & I Circus Store at 8012 South Tacoma Way, were photographed in August of 1964 shortly after they arrived in Tacoma from the Congo. Burma, the little female, died soon after she arrived. Ivan, the male of the pair, resided off and on at the Irwin's home until his natural playfulness, curiosity and strength proved destructive. In 1967 he moved into the little gorilla house at the B & I that had been built for him, located between the pet shop and the clothing department; he was a resident at the B& I for nearly 30 years. In 1994, the family of E.L. Irwin donated Ivan to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. The zoo then arranged a permanent loan to Zoo Atlanta where it was felt that Ivan could best integrate into a social group -from Tacoma Public Library archives
I also think it is time you met the author, Katherine Applegate, online. Click the link below to hear how the real story of Ivan motivated her.

Many of you are aware of the very disturbing and heart-wrenching story of Amanda Todd who took her own life last Wednesday after continuous physical and verbal attacks. Please discuss this with your parents and we will continue the conversation in class on Monday.
Remember when we were discussing the 'friendly' competition for a chance to skype with the author of Ivan? Well we have a couple of tricks up our sleeve to try to make this happen. One thing we are doing is putting together a montage of class pictures of all teachers involved in reading 'One and Only Ivan." Did you know that about 2/3 of our school is reading this novel?
I want your input Div. 2. What should our class picture look like? eg. Do we want to hold up our favourite quotes? message for the author? stand behind signs of our favourite character?
Please give your ideas on this comment page. We are doing this Monday so needs to be easy to prepare.
I am going to email you a document that we can share. The purpose is to generate all the questions we have about The One and Only Ivan. Think about questions you think the characters or author have answered already. Do you have any good questions for the author Katherine Applegate? She has said she will choose the most interesting questions to answer personally. Wouldn't that be cool! What makes a good (effective) question? We have started some eg. If you could save a character, who would it be? Should there be zoos?
Good work today. We did great during test's. We got our french title pages back today. Make sure you put your title pages in your french book so you don't lose them.Today in science we corrected our science and we shared some ideas at snack about the suggestion blog.We also did warm/cold hands in art today.
Make sure you write your meanings to the quotes we wrote down on our quote sheets.
Comment and tell me what you think Ivan means by "am I a human or am I a gorilla" and also tell me why you think Ivan is starting to remember things from when he was a kid?
Finish your art hands . For science you have section 2.2.
Have a great weekend every body. By Tweetiegal

Science 2.1 on classification
Complete your character descriptions for Stella, Bob, Mack, Ivan, Ruby, Julie and George.
Respond here to our class question:
Ivan is revealing more human qualities. He said that he supposed he was going to get into trouble when painting with chocolate frosting but at that moment, he didn't care. He wanted to make something, anything, the way he used to.
Many of you in class had connections to this feeling of knowing you were going to get into trouble but doing it anyway. Explain here what the action was and the difference between what motivated you and what is motivating Ivan. (those who don't have this experience, explain why you think Ivan followed through with his painting on the fridge door.
We all miss Stella who was a very good story teller. Remember when Stella told the story about Jambo. It was when she stated that a good zoo is how humans make amends. Here is a link to the real Jambo story. Jambo's rescue

We have seen an amazing video today on the Mountain Gorillas in the Virunga area and have witnessed their social behaviour. We are also learning about gorilla's personality, the environment they live in and factors affecting their survival. In our novel, we are starting to learn how Ivan feels about humans. Ivan has made some interesting friendships so far, including a human, elephant and a dog.
I want you to watch another video clip by clicking on the link below. This reminded me of Stella and Bob. We humans can learn a great deal from animals. Think about all three of these resources and comment here on what you think we can learn from animals. Be sure to give reasons why.
On Edmodo this weekend, comment to your global friends on what you think the following statement that Stella said means, "A good zoo is how humans make amends." (remember your THINK criteria)
Math - due Tuesday
Here is a challenge to all you math problem solvers borrowed from Ms. Van. Click on the link below to see the Flash mind reader. If you can explain how this is done, you will receive a treat on Tuesday. Email me privately if you think you have solved this problem of how this works.
