Please follow through on your homework activities as it greatly inconveniences the rest of us who are ready to move forward. Gr.7s in Mrs. Van's class have a test tomorrow and gr. 6s have their test on Thursday. Your test gr. 6s is area and word problems. Who threw their lunch in the garbage today? Just thinking about our poverty discussion. If you don't want to eat your lunch, take it home and eat it later. If you don't like what you have for lunch, inform your parents...please don't waste food. Today we shared our group's thoughts about the causes of poverty. This is what we have shared so far. Tomorrow we will read some articles to give us more background information. Post specific examples of poverty that you notice in your community of Surrey. What do you think the causes are?

I don't think I have seen people in poverty in Surrey before. I will do down town Vancouver instead. I think I saw someone in absolute poverty because they lived on the street and could barley afford any money. I think the cause is because houses down there are very expensive and they did not have enough money to buy one. It can also be very crowded down there and maybe there were no house for sale at the time that were close to the persons budget.

I have noticed that Whalley has quite a lot of poverty within. I thought that this kind of poverty is more like relative poverty, and I think that it is caused by maybe unemployment, debt, financial problems, lack of jobs? I don't exactly know, but I think it is most likely to be caused by financial problems.

I haven't noticed anyone in Surrey living in poverty. I have seen a person in my neighbourhood who has a mental illness and i don't think they have a job. I'm not really sure though. I have seen people closer to Langley though living in absolute poverty. They are homeless and begging for food. Even if there is no one that I have seen I think a reason of poverty in our community could be debt. ALOT of people are in debt. It could be so bad that they cant pay back and got evicted. Unemployment also. It could be caused by an injury or disability. Even a disease that limits you. Quote of the day: "We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our homes to remedy this kind of poverty." ~Mother Teresa. Quote #2: "We need to steer clear of this poverty of ambition, where people want to drive fancy cars and wear nice clothes and live in nice apartments but don't want to work hard to accomplish these things. Everyone should try to realize their full potential." ~Barack Obama.

In surrey I have seen a "homeless man" living on the streets with a shopping cart and he would sleep on the streets. I think this is absolute poverty because he cant afford the basic needs (food, water, shelter and clothing). I feel bad for all homeless people living on the streets because whenever its raining they would have to deal with the cold and no shelter while we have food on our table and a roof over our head. I think this "guy" is homeless because he lost his family or job, didn't have money or even got into drugs.

I have seen a homeless man and he was collecting bottles and going in the trash cans for food. I think he was in absolute poverty because he didn't look like he had any money, he was very desperate to find food and he didn't look like he had shelter.

I notice that east Hastings has a lot of poverty of both kinds!!! Also like Halliday said aswell I saw a home less person with a sign. That really impacted me because of what I have as far as cloths, toys, and food and how little they have.

I don't really see poverty in a specific area, though I see them sometime's on the middle of the streets. Like when your turining left and you wait for the green signal to come on you see them walking with a sign, asking for help. Sometimes what I don't like is when I see them lying, I know that they need shelter money and food but does'nt mean you have to lie. Like one time when I was in the car me and my family saw a homeless man walking with a sign that said " no food no money, I have a problem in my brain, help." If he had a problem in his brain then how can he write. I don't know for sure but just saying what I think.

He might not be lying. If there is something wrong with his brain it might not be the area where it affects muscles and writing. It might be a mental illness like dementia or he could have a brain disease. He might have a tumor or brain swelling. I'm not sure. Either of us could be wrong but good point though! Wealthy people sometimes do the same. They lie and dress like their homeless just so they can get money out of other people when they don't know their actually wealthy.

I notice that in Whaley there are many homeless people living in poverty. I do not know what the exact causes are but they could be debt, addiction or unemployment.

I have noticed poverty in Surrey and Langley. In fact, last weekend my dad gave a few quarters to a homeless man in Langley. Most homeless people I've seen have been older, so I assume that they lost their job and their house and ended up on the streets.
