Community It was another productive and fun week two weeks ago with events such as birthdays, Meet the Teacher barbeque, the Terry Fox run and Photo Day! It was lovely to meet and reconnect with so many parents on Thursday. This week we continued with our classroom community goals and many students have committed to specific school and classroom leadership jobs and class committees. I am so excited to see where we go from here. For example, one of our students suggested we do a lesson on memes, so we will have a meme challenge soon. (see above for my first example...what message do you think I am trying to send?) Curriculum We have furthered our learning with divisibility rules and have another couple of weeks to review skills before a final unit test. Students will continue to bring home their daily Big 5 math review and weekly quiz for parents to view and sign on Mondays. We are starting our 4th week of 100 word writes and they can be viewed on this class site under each student's fictitious name. I have modelled how to give feedback with at least one 'star' (positive comment) and one 'wish'(suggestion for improvement. Each Friday students will also share with parents their reflection of the week and how they have integrated one of the core competencies. The purpose is to keep parents informed of student learning, metacognition and progress. Here is week #3 100 Word Write pick! One day Professor Steve came into work in the animal hospital when suddenly a man dressed in a big purple coat rushed into the animal hospital. "Bob here has a cold and needs an urgent treatment As he held out a shivering crocodile, Professor Steve leaped into action. He grabbed the crocodile and ran into the back room with the man on his heel. "This will be a difficult procedure," said Steve as he pulled on his gloves. He twisted the crocodile around into an upright position and gave it a treat. Immediately it shot up and walked out waving. I am pleased to say that the students of Division 2 are showing that they understand their role as grade 7 leaders. Yes, reminders of expectations, commitment and responsibility are necessary from time to time but they 'get it'. For example, most are using their daily agenda on the board to be ready for each lesson and using their planner to meet class work and notice deadlines. They show respect during instruction, independent and group work and while walking through the halls. They are also showing an interest in their learning, a willingness to try new activities and they are learning how to solve confusions and correct mistakes. Students: One key strategy is to ask for help immediately. If you cannot ask during class, then approach your teacher at recess or after school. Do not go home and ask your parents to ask your teacher...this is a year for taking ownership and being in charge of your own learning. An example is to correct your daily Big 5 and math practice of divisibility rules during class or for homework. If you do not know how, then ask me for help that day. Another example is to remind your parents to sign notices and to pack your own backpack. Know what is in your backpack! All students were given a specific binder for math this year and have organized their exercise books and a binder for other subjects to date. They have labelled reading response books and have a reading section in their binder to complement our reading study. We have begun discussing why we enjoy reading and are encouraging others to read the books we love. A graffiti wall has been created to share significant quotes from our novels to inspire our classmates to read a variety of genres. Our class read aloud is Wonder. Other labelled books are a math journal with all rules and examples, daily Big 5 and practice books, a writing exercise book where they are practicing the writing process, a writing/reading section in their binder, science, (beginning with Chemistry) and social section in their binder and learning log and core competency books where students will reflect on their learning. Parents will soon be invited to read these. The purpose is to keep parents informed with their children's progress. Congratulations to our newly elected co-presidents who will lead the class in a variety of activities. I was impressed to see so many show an interest in joining committees. If your child consistently has more than the suggested time for homework, please contact me. Homework versus Homestudy Homework is work assigned by a teacher. Usually it is class work that needs completing. More time may be necessary when working on projects. Home study is work done by students either by teacher recommendations, student choice or by parent choice. Three examples of either include: reviewing class material; reading; studying for tests. 100 Word Write of the week! (Congrats to Travasta Sauce) Ten years after takeoff from Earth, we landed on Arian. While going through Arian's atmosphere, I spotted numerous colours and a humongous metal and glass object. When we landed I proposed that we explore it. We found out that the metal and glass object was a broken lamp. Lying next to the lamp were pale green globules that were as soft as pillows. As my comrade made contact with the globules a monstrous creature erupted from the crates to my right, yelling "last time humans came here, they destroyed this lamp, dumping out all of its contents,"! As we ran. Our first week together as a class was spent on learning and reviewing routines, expectations and community. We have labelled our exercise books, 2 binders, and finalized our weekly schedule. The schedule and clock partner pages are in our planner. We all have daily jobs to keep our classroom neat and organized and we will be changing our seating partners every 2 weeks in order to practice collaboration, cooperation and tolerance. We will use our planners daily for homework and personal reminders and our supplies are kept in our bins or a baggie with Ms Wilson to be used as needed.
We will spend the next two weeks continuing to learn about expectations for independent, partner and group work, as well as curricular areas. Each Friday in our learning logs, we will write about our weekly learnings and how we practised the Core Competencies. These logs are to be shown to our parents every weekend to keep them updated on our class work and understandings. If students have any confusions, problems or questions, they must approach Ms Wilson and ask for clarification or help. Important dates for September are recorded in the student planner.
