Have you thought about what you will wear for Hallowe'en? The idea committee would like you to dress up on Friday for our class celebration. There will be contests, music, games and more. They wanted me to ask you to post your favourite music on the site today so the DJ can prepare her music. Each student is encouraged to bring his/her own drink and a snack to share for Friday afternoon. We had a great time skating today. View the gallery of pictures below. We also had our science quiz on the properties of matter. We will have a gallery walk to view your States of Matter activities tomorrow. Reminders: Tomorrow is Band and French. Today is the deadline for your kidblog write to be published. Homework and Reminders: Science: Review for science test on matter tomorrow. POST one palindrome (review of new vocabulary in OFTM) Here are practice reviews for 4.1 and 4.2. Also volume, mass and density Tomorrow is the 2nd day to work on your states of matter activities. Math: If you missed your math test today, let your teacher know tomorrow so you can arrange for a time to write it. We are starting decimals tomorrow. Reading-commenting on Edmodo and Kidblog -wait until Thursday to respond to this week's teacher question but you should answer or response to global classmates and teachers who have been on your blog. Be sure to click on new post when you respond. Writing: Email Ms W when you are ready for 100 work challenge link to the world! Be sure to revise and edit before you publish on Kidblog. Deadline Wed. (tomorrow) Review of density (see below) Will a 14-lb. bowling ball float in the Dead Sea? Click on the link to view the Terry Fox video made from Hillcrest. Be ready for skating tomorrow. Tell your parents who are driving that we will leave school at 10:15 and skate from 10:30-11:30. Thanks to all parents who were able to read with their children. Next time I hope to give you more notice parents...sorry with We Day and Vball game...didn't get the message to you earlier. Here are some action shots ...reading and our Think We team. Important Dates: Skating 'Wednesday,' Oct. 29th (please ask parents to drive as we are short, bring all forms and rental money in too) Hallowe'en Oct. 31st POST: (Growth vs fixed mindset) Last week's question was about Carley changing. One student responded that Carley was angry when she was first placed in the Murphy's home but is now more open to joining in with activities. We sometimes feel uncomfortable in new situations or resist to change. The question is 'How do you feel about yourself? How are you in new situations? Are you eager and willing to learn new things? Are you a risk taker or do you feel more comfortable with the same routines and behaviours. Writing: See kidblog for prompt if you were away. Edit and revise your writing drafts we worked on today in class for the 100 word challenge. (use your use your dictionaries, writer's mumble and thesaurus.) Email Ms W by Wed when you have put your write on your kidblog and I will link to the global site. *see kidblog button to the right Reading: Our reading focus is well under way. We are about half way through the term so check that you are on track and meeting the expectations to date.

Here is a fun video with reminders about what you need to think about while reading your novels! Math: * unit tests for grade 6/7 Tuesday (tomorrow) -grade 7s see your teacher for details -grade 6s: (check to see if you are ready) -understanding the difference between factors and multiples -finding factors using a factor rainbow, arrays, factor tree, -understanding the difference between prime and composite numbers -solving problems involving factors and multiples -using a number line to compare and order integers -how to follow the rules for order of operations Science: -review for unit test on matter (Wed.) (what will be on the test?) -explain with examples, the properties of matter (define, qualitative, quantitative, states, particle model) -show how to find mass, volume of regular and irregular solids, volume of liquids and density -in-class assignment of states of matter, particle model (planning today in class with group, Tues-Wed complete, Thurs-present) Who doesn't like density!! Complete page 123 #1-4 if you didn't finish that yesterday. Be sure to review your concepts in science as you have a unit test coming up next week. ...and who doesn't like Bill Nye the science guy. Watch this video sometime this weekend to review the concepts of matter and help prepare for your unit test next week (probably Wednesday). If you have any questions, post them here on the site and your classmates can help. This Monday, October 27th, Hillcrest will be celebrating the 7th annual DEAR event in support of National School Library Day.Please invite your parents, grandparents, and other family members to join you to read together for 20 minutes ..beginning at 9 am. This will be a good opportunity to show them how you spend your independent reading time.
Skating notice and rental money must be brought in Monday as we need to find out if we have enough drivers. gr. 6 math - Just the one question on integers. Start reviewing for your unit test on Tuesday. Reading-be sure to answer this week's question on Kidblog and Edmodo and to respond to a third global classmate on both sites. We saw some very thoughtful students practising the ROLES. Thanks to Willow for putting away the cushion when she wasn't even sitting on it. Thanks to Bug who helped hand out hot lunches to those who were not present at the time. You two rock!! POST: What are some examples that you have noticed of others practising the ROLES? Science: Thursday we will demonstrate the amazing 9 layer density tower for more 'sick' science! Today we learned that when you don't have the 'foundation in place, you cannot build the house.' Yesterday you were to read with partners, define density, give an example and tell what units it is measured in. Welllllllll? You got caught didn't you. It was difficult to move on today and apply that knowledge. Learn from this and next time put more effort into your thinking while reading (or at the very least read the recommended work) HW pg. 120 #1-4 science text and pg. 76 worksheet. Be sure you can explain to your parents how to measure density for a liquid, regular and irregular solid. HW Reading:
Continue your discussion about Carley. Be sure to respond to at 2 different global by the end of tomorrow. Reading questions are now up on your sites. Remember to answer directly to your colour on Edmodo. Edmodo: Post to your colour 1. We are getting to know Carley a bit better. She says and does many things that reveal her character. Describe two traits (characteristics) that you think Carley displays . Give an example and explanation of why you feel that way. Do not repeat the same answer that another group member has already given. "eg. Carley is physically and emotionally vulnerable . She needs physical care as she is subject to the abuse of her mom and stepdad. I also believe she is emotionally vulnerable because she is susceptible to the bullying of her classmate, she wants so badly to be loved by her mom and has a difficult time telling her true feelings." 2. We will give you one more week to try to guess the location of each other's school. Kidblog: Remember to click on the link for the 3rd and 4th hour classes, then click on one of the students and respond directly to them. Here is your question for discussion this week. We are getting to know Carley better and she has changed since she first came to live with the Murphys. First of all, explain how you think she is changing. Next, pretend you are a friend giving her advice. What would you say? Tomorrow: You all have the directions for tomorrow and you know what class you are joining to be supervised while I am at We Day. I know you will be good role models and the work is due Thursday morning. Have a great day tomorrow!! Reminders: Field trip Oct. 29th Don't bring skating form and money tomorrow...bring in Thursday Oct. 23 Monster Mash 5:30-8:30 Oct. 24 Non-instructional Day (no school) Oct. 29 Mad Science Oct. 31 Hallowe'en Parking Lot trick or treat 5-8
What a great day it was today! We started out with the Terry Fox run, a tad wet but lots of spirit and smiles in honour of Terry Fox. I'll bet he never complained about the rain. We read a couple more chapters of One For The Murphys and are starting to record the characteristics/traits of our key characters. This will be part of your question to discuss with your global friends next week. (Please email me if you are still having problems commenting on the Kidblog or Edmodo sites.) Remember to continue to ask questions to find out where your Edmodo buddies are living. POST: Carley has a plush toy giraffe. The long neck for reaching tree tops and long flexible tongue for grabbing leaves off branches are excellent traits of the giraffe. Describe one characteristic or trait of yours. Homework: Start preparing your book talk. (There are 6 students presenting Thursday) The rest of you will present in the next three weeks. *Remember you can use a variety of methods to present. Criteria:
We also had our first meeting with our grade 2 and 3 buddies. I was very impressed with the positive examples you modelled. I observed helping, kindness and encouragement. It was amazing how similar the pictures looked. Science- we reviewed states of matter and properties. Our last property is density. Start reviewing concepts as you will have a unit test in a couple of weeks.
POST: 3 different examples of density...(in class we showed how wood and a rubber ball float on top of water) The rubber ball was floating lower than the wood so the water is the most dense, then the rubber ball and the wood is the least dense. *Be creative in your experimenting. We suggested trying different solutions eg. salt and water Is hot water denser than cold? (you would need to use food colouring to see which one is on top) Another thing we did today was review the colour wheel. We learned how to mix primary colours to make all secondary and tertiary colours. We will finish these next week. Grade 6 math mid-chapter review is due Monday. Picture day is Monday (see yesterdays' page for the important dates coming up.) Hot lunch is also Monday. Science: How many elements are there? Watch below to learn the elements from the Periodic Table. Math-6s mid-chapter review for Monday Homework for tomorrow: 2 Reading Global Read Aloud classmates for our novel One For The Murphys: A) Kidblog: 1. You have a choice of 1 out of 4 questions/comments. 2. Respond to a student in your global classroom. Directions (click on links): Grade 7s kidblog.org div2-A with GRA 3rd hour class Grade 6s kidblog.org div2-B with GRA 4th hour class **Be sure to create (click on) new post when you comment.** B) Edmodo: (Respond to the question why Carly doesn't cry and ask/answer 5 mystery skype questions about where this class lives) Here are some of your comments to our global friends about why Carly doesn't cry. Remember to use the THINK criteria when you comment. I think Carly is not crying because her Mom told her if she cries she is not tough she Carly always tries to not cry. It is normal not wanting to cry because you dont want any one to see your weakness but you cant stop, carly is a really strong girl she can hold it in but how long? I think Carly doesn't cry because she's afraid, because her mom used to tell her stuff like cryings for losers. But i think she must have cried at least once because its hard not to cry. I think Carly should be able to cry and want to cry, because she has a lot of things going on in her life. At the beginning of the book Carly was talking to the nurse and she asked if she was going to a orphanage and the nurse said "no one calls it that anymore". The nurse should have said something nice to comfort her. I feel bad for Carly because of what all she's bin through so much.... What I mean by that is her mom always went to casinos and never had enough money to go buy food or get clothes. Her mom also taught Carly bad habits like not to cry, the reason why I think that is a bad habit is because if you get hurt or had something going on your'e going to want to cry. I think why Carly hasn't cried in a year is because she was tought from the beginning not to cry, to be tough. Her mother said that crying was a sign of weekness, so Carly never cried. maybe its because she was afraid of what Dennis would do, if he saw her crying. or maybe she was so used to everything in er life, she didn't know why to cry, she was used to her drunken mother and her horrid husband, and the craziness of the streets of Vegas. I think the reason Carly hasn't cried is she's thinking that her mom will pity her and think of her as weak. But the fact that Carly hasn't cried in just over a year means she's probably really tough. But because she hasn't cried in over a year she has all these stored up emotions that are just waiting to burt out. I think that Carly should stop being an angsty teen and behave. Her mom is in the hospital so obviously she'll be in foster care for a while. Honestly, she doesnt have the right to get mad at everyone for something she brought onto herself. She has to learn to accept her temporary mom and just settle in and get along. Wow Flying Bob was fantastic today!! Here are some tricks you do not want to try at home...especially losing your pants!! Ha Ha! Reminders: Terry Fox Run tomorrow morning Weekly update - see below and show parents. Math: Grade 6s - See the link below to review your prime factors. factor tree game -practice page for homework PE - we have begun our volleyball unit. I am impressed with the progress made in one class with your volleying. We are also learning to bring proper gym strip each PE day. Science: We have reviewed Matter and its properties a) qualitative and b) quantitative. We have practiced examples of quantitative measurement eg. volume, density and displacement. Start reviewing each night so you are sure you understand these concepts. See the video below to help you review. Here we are after our lesson of quantitative measuring tools. Can you explain how to find the volume of an irregular solid?Reminders:
Band tomorrow French quiz Thur. Oct. 23 Notices went home today for PAC fundraiser. Terry Fox run on Friday. POST: What is one thing you would like to learn about this year? |
