Yay! Our Grade 7 gradwear arrived. To parents and students: Community It was another productive week continuing with our learning and classroom community goals . Students have joined extracurricular volleyball, Think We and are well into their routine of their school leadership jobs. Core competencies We completed a reflection last week regarding recognizing how they can improve their learning. Students practice recording homework and reminders in their planners, organizing their notebooks and bins, completing homework (work not completed during class) and meeting the daily classroom expectations eg. daily math corrections and preparing assignments for the following day. Students who struggle with these responsibilities, need to spend additional time outside of class in order to achieve success. I am available before and after school for extra help. Please encourage your child to ask me for help or approach me with their concerns. Curriculum Math: Final unit test results for divisibility are on Freshgrade and original copies of tests, journal and practice are in student binders and exercise books. We began our unit on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division using decimals. Literacy Students are continuing to record at the back of their writing exercise books, specific personal areas of focus for their next writes. We have begun our writing connection with two international schools and student pen pals. We are in our 8th week of 100 word writes and they can be viewed on this class site under the student's fictitious name. Pen pals have introduced themselves and we will begin giving and receiving feedback. (at least one positive comment and one suggestion for improvement). Students are also beginning book sharing and formal commercials this next week. Reminders: Student Fresh grade portfolios are up and running and parents should have received an invitation to their child's portfolio. Please email Ms Wilson if you (parents) cannot open the site. P.E. is every Tuesday and Thursday: Gym strip, participation, leadership, team play, sportsmanship and fitness are expectations. We are working on volleyball skills and games over the next few weeks. To parents and students: Community It was another productive week continuing with our learning, classroom community goals and school leadership jobs. As well, some students have joined extracurricular volleyball and our Think We club members have had the privilege of going to We Day. Core competencies We did not complete a reflection last week because there was a non-instructional day on Friday. Students are learning to take responsibility for their personal learning. Each day they practice recording homework and reminders in their planners, organizing their notebooks and bins, completing homework (work not completed during class) and meeting the daily classroom expectations eg. daily math corrections. Students who struggle with these responsibilities, need to spend additional time outside of class in order to achieve success. I am available before and after school for extra help. Next week we begin our writing connection with two international schools and student pen pals. Pen pals have introduced themselves and this week will begin giving and receiving feedback. (at least one positive comment and one suggestion for improvement). Students are will begin book sharing and formal commercials next week. P.E. is every Tuesday and Thursday: Gym strip, participation, leadership, team play, sportsmanship and fitness are expectations. (Below one of the many games to be played this year) Science demonstrations of quantitative properties-students had 3 class periods and at least one weekend to work cooperatively with their group of 3-4 to read, identify the concepts, and prepare their lesson for their classmates. These will finish next week. Upcoming Dates:
October 23 DEAR (Drop everything and read - buddy reading with our buddies) October 30 Student interims go home (see Freshgrade and student work: notebooks, binders) November 1 Photo Re‐Takes November 2 Early Dismissal 1:35 November 3 Non‐Instructional Day November 9 Remembrance Day Assembly November 10 Non‐Instructional Day November 13 Remembrance Day Stat Holiday December 4-8 Book Fair December 11‐13 Report Card (1) December 14 Early Dismissal 1:35 December 22 Last Day before Christmas /Winter Break Dec. 25 to Jan 5 Christmas/Winter Break Community
It was another productive and fun week including our amazing Titan Race on Friday night. We teachers loved watching the groups strategize, organize and carry out the 15 tasks. There was camaraderie, excitement and laughter. Students continued with our classroom community goals and many students are following through with specific school and classroom leadership jobs and class committees. As well, some students have joined extracurricular soccer and should feel proud of their accomplishments this season. Core competencies Students completed a card challenge while following specific rules and focussing on how well they interacted with their group members. Their goal was to make sure each member felt valued. They brought their duotangs home to share with parents, explaining how they used strengths of each member, how successful they were and what they did when they were frustrated. Curriculum Math: We reviewed our divisibility rules and are preparing for our final unit test this next week. Students brought home their 2 Big 5 math reviews and weekly quiz for parents to view and sign last week. Review booklets have been assessed, should be corrected and stored in math journal exercise books to be used for reference. Literacy Students are practising the writing process and after conferencing with the teacher, they record the specific skills they will focus on during their next writes. Next week we begin our writing connection with two international schools and student pen pals. We are starting our 6th week of 100 word writes and they can be viewed on this class site under each student's fictitious name. I have modelled how to give feedback with at least one 'star' (positive comment) and one 'wish'(suggestion for improvement). Students will introduce themselves to their new writing pen pals, then practice giving and receiving feedback. Students are following their reading guidelines of recording, sharing and enjoying their independent reading books. Soon further sharing will take place with book commercials. Science Students are preparing specific lessons to teach their classmates over the next two weeks about quantitative properties of matter. Reminders: We now have all permission forms for Fresh grade and parents should expect an invitation to their child's portfolio soon.
