There are so many events going on in the world. Which do you think is the most important? All five classes of grade 6/7s will be celebrating the Olympics. You chose an ancestral country and today made that country's flag. Next week the intermediate open area will be transformed into an Olympic Village! This weekend find out what food your heritage country eats and post an example.
Video Link: Watch the Vancouver opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics again and take time to remind yourself of the importance of sport, fair play, and respect for people around the globe. We have begun our socials current events learning. You have chosen a newspaper article that interests you and has to do with a global event. (see criteria and previous descriptions) Over the weekend you need to be sure you have shared with me a google doc that includes the topic, your key question (what are you really curious about with this topic) and the 5W's for the news article. If you have time begin reading other sources to gather background information in order to write your opinion. (due Friday) Your final assignment should be 2 paragraphs: one summary of the article and one opinion paragraph. We will learn what the structure of an opinion paragraph looks like. Math: same as yesterday Goals: one more week to complete...due Friday Monday is French and Tuesday is our walk in the morning to Clayton. We leave Hillcrest at 8:30. I will send a newsletter home regarding two events that are coming up; artist and golf. Have a great weekend!

I love the pictures some of the grade 6's drew of me when they were finished their math assessment. *see below for a good chuckle Goals should be in place and all checklists, calendars, stickies, etc. should be created. You have the rest of this week and all next week to practice this goal. Bring your forms signed by parents tomorrow. We had our final working session for science today. Be sure to share your google doc with me by tomorrow morning. You click on 'save' in the right-hand corner of your doc, put your name as the title, type '[email protected]' in the box that says invite people, and click share and save, then done. (Let's get some different articles...we have terrorism at the Sochi Olympics, Global warming causing change in the weather pattern, war in Syria and pollution. Be sure you have a current event from a newspaper before choosing your topic. Please post your topic if you did not do this on last night's site and include the link with your article. Look for other articles in order to give you additional background information and begin reading. Remember to use your strategies: reread, visualize, connections, determine what's important, etc. Bring the AFL (do you understand this assignment? other questions?) sheet tomorrow...ticket in. Art: Find out your heritage (if you were born in another country other than Canada, your parents or ancestors were born in a country other than Canada) Have a look at the flag of that country and be prepared to create the flag (partners) tomorrow. We will be using these to kick off our Olympics celebration. We had fun learning in math today. Cuisenaire rods are another option for students to model their understanding of fractions. Check your teacher's site for your homework. Some of you have a test tomorrow so you should be practising extra questions. Gr. 6's have no math homework other than review. Goals -1st week is well on its way and one more week to go. How are you going to prove your goal? What will your evidence be? Science- You have one more class tomorrow to finish your note-taking and organize your ideas. You and your partner should split the tasks in order to get them done. Socials-We have reviewed your assignment and everyone has taken this criteria sheet home to review what is expected. Tonight your first task is to choose your topic (you have been thinking about this for a week or more and must post a decision tonight) I will continue to give you examples like the article on Mandela. **No, Bieber is not a global issue." Once you pick your current event, ask a question that you are curious about. It may be easier to find a news topic by first looking through some newspapers for one that interests you. Here are some online news sources. Have a look at newsela. Just click to read different articles...you don't need a password. You can even change the reading level to suit yourself. http://www.newsela.com/ The Province is another option http://www.theprovince.com/index.html or CBC News. Post your topic and the link to one website that you found a your news on. This will help others find their topic. Let's see how many different topics we can come up with. Come on you guys...take some risks...step outside the box...try something new! Those who want to do drama, it's time to put your 'persuasive' writing skills into practice. We looked at the linking words we are using when we write, reviewed what our term one goals are and what our next steps are for this term. We are also learning parts of speech, such as the difference between an adverb and adjective and how to use these effectively when we write. We had fun playing on the outdoor basketball court as well as learning how to improve our Genius Hour website pages. Reminder: Tomorrow is band in the morning and walking field trip right after lunch. We will be back at Hillcrest before dismissal. In Science we reviewed our adaptations unit. We are learning to think critically about the adaptations that have taken place and how organisms have evolved. There are many very cool examples. The issue of genetically engineered species has many opinions. Post your opinions on this subject. Continue to review the concepts in science as I will be testing your knowledge at the end of next week. Math:
