Great Terry Fox run today. Thanks to all who sent in donations for this wonderful cause. Go Div.2!! Terry Fox would have really appreciated your enthusiasm, leadership and participation today. Jon Aldag's (Liberals) PresentationToday, the Grade 6/7 students had an opportunity to listen to Jon Aldag, the Liberal candidate from the Cloverdale/Langley riding, talk about politics. He gave an informative non-partisan presentation on how the government works, the election process, and what the government does for people like you and me. Mr. Aldag also held a Q&A period where the students were free to ask questions based on what they had learned about in class. It was great for the students to be able to make real connections to what they have been learning about in Social Studies. POST: We are thinking about having our own classroom election.

We read more of Wonder and some of the other characters were introduced. There was a reference to Mr. T. Here is a photo of what they were talking about when Auggie asked if the principal was called Mr. T. Mr. T. was a big time celebrity in the 1980s. He was on the original A-Team TV show. He was also a boxer in one of the Rocky movies, Rocky III. One of his famous catchphrases was, "I pity the fool who ..." followed by some sort of description. Something like, "I pity the fool who doesn't read books!" Today, the students began to share their learning about the hot topics surrounding the 2015 elections. They have started to learn about the pros and cons to some topics from vaccinations to government surveillance and also about privacy and freedom. Next week, a candidate from the Liberal party of the Cloverdale riding will be coming to talk to the students about his platform. We are hoping to have the other candidates come to Hillcrest to talk about what they hope to do if they are elected. (Thank you Mr. Hong for being on Twitter.) You can show your parents where you started getting some of your information from on this link.

In class students will be sharing their reading in a variety of ways including book talks, discussions and visual representations. They will keep track of the books they read in their reading exercise books. Math: Grade 7s have just begun their unit on divisibility and finding factors of a number using the rules. Find the definitions (tell what they mean) of these terms on this link: Whole, integer, rational, natural, irrational numbers. Gr. 6s have Mrs. Farrell as their math teacher for their multiples and factors unit and should check her class site for reminders about math homework. Why not begin with some fun facts about numbers. 'what are numbers?' We have just learned from our class novel Wonder, that the main character, Auggie is anxious about going to school. POST:Comment on what worries you the most about going to school? Socials: We began our socials unit today of researching the issues that the 4 main political parties are using as their platforms. We could not have gone if it weren't for you. We had a great day at the Grouse Grind. What 'grit' the grade 6/7s have!! You should feel so proud of yourselves today. You had a positive mindset and you did it. It was great to meet your parents last night and I look forward to meeting those who could not make it. Parents who did not receive a technology newsletter will need to fill one out this weekend. You are asked to set up a gmail account with your child. Please use a fictitious name for your child's email address. Gmail is very important for some of our web-based learning tools this year. Students will bring this form home today or Monday if they are not at school today. Also students please have your parents complete this survey by clicking on this link. POST: Tell one story about today (something funny that happened, something interesting you saw, something different you did, etc.) Here are the directions for those students who need to set up a new gmail account. Homework/Reminders:
Parent survey if not at Meet the teacher last night Technology newsletter filled in with gmail Entertainment books Any more grade 6 vaccination forms bring dividers for binder on Monday All supplies and novel Another great day of learning and working together. I especially enjoyed hearing the m and m's answers about 'what you would do differently'. It is wonderful to hear how aware you are of your actions and understanding. This is called metacognition. POST: How well do you know yourself? What do you think your parents would say about you if they were asked to describe you. (eg. personality, likes, dislikes, qualities, quirks) After you answer, go ask your parents to describe you. How close were you? Grouse Grind tomorrow!! Yay!!! This is a physical fitness challenge that takes the 'grit', determination and perseverance that we were talking about yesterday. You should go at your own pace so hike with someone at your level because the main goal is to finish the hike and to have fun with your friends. We leave right at 8:45 so tell your parent drivers to come into the class at 8:30-8:40 to have their insurance and license verified by me. Click on this link tomorrow morning to check the weather on the mountain. The mountain should update the status if they decide to close the mountain. In this case, it would be a regular school day. Here are some tips for the grind:
Dress appropriately for the weather eg. bring a change of clothing, running or hiking shoes, hat if raining, layers such as a sweatshirt and light raincoat that you can either put in your backpack or tie around your waist if you get overheated. Also bring a lunch and water bottle. Homework and Reminders:
