Language Arts - Practice with Discovering Someone's ArgumentThe Olympic torch can symbolize the Olympic games. When one holds the torch, it can mean they are responsible for hosting the Olympic games. In the image above, the Vancouver mascots are passiing the torch to the "Russian Bear" because Sochi, a city in Russia, will host the 2014 Olympics. Note that this caricature was drawn in the time after the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and before the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Today, we discussed how to form an opinion (or argument), provide reasons to support your argument, and provide evidence to support your reasons. In the picture above, your homework is to write the illustrator's argument, a reason behind this argument, and detailed evidence supporting your reason. Remember, your evidence must be verifiable. That is, you must be able to show someone your details. You can use these two facts to help you with your response. 1. Canada is the country that won the most gold medals in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games. 2. The Canadian Men's Hockey team defeated the Russian Men's Hockey team in the elimination round of the Olympic hockey tournament by a score of 7-3.

The artist's opinion is that Russian will not be a good host for the 2014 Olympics and will take revenge on Canada. The Russian Bear is big and has a dead beaver on it's head. It also is saying: "We are going to crush you Canada." The bear is big and scary to intimidate the Vancouver mascots. He has a dead beaver on his head to show you that he hats us.

Opinion: Russia wants payback for being defeated and feels that revenge is the best way to make their country feel better (like bullying).

My opinion is that Russia doesn't like Canada and is mad because Canada beat Russia in mens hockey 7-3. I think the picture is just a little funny thing that the illustrator made for fun.
