What is the message from the song Moonshadow?Today in Language Arts, we practiced how we are able to recognize an opinion, reasons, and evidence/details supporting those reasons by doing an in-class activity. HomeworkThis afternoon, I gave you a handout to the lyrics of the song Moonshadow by Cat Stevens. Using the handout, I want you to write a persuasive paragaph telling me the message of the song. Your paragraph must have an opinion, and at least one reason with a connecting evidence/detail supporting the reason. I will also look for quality and details. For example, - Is the opinion clearly stated? - Is the reason or reasons clearly stated? - Is the evidence/details clearly stated and has a strong connection to the reason? - Can the evidence/detail be verified? - Sentence variety. Please include your real name at the end of your paragraph and email your paragraph to Mr. R. Thanks, Mr. R. Cat Stevens - Moonshadow Lyrics Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land, Oh if I ever lose my hands, Oh if.... I won't have to work no more. And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colours all run dry, Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Oh if.... I won't have to cry no more. Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow And if I ever lose my legs, I won't moan, and I won't beg, Yes if I ever lose my legs, Oh if.... I won't have to walk no more. And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south, Yes if I ever lose my mouth, Oh if.... I won't have to talk... Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night? Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

Mr. R, this song is from my era...I even have a Cat Stevens record album (yes, the real vinyl). Today I thought I would try your homework assignment.

Well StuntDevil that is what he says. Do you think Cat Stevens is thinking negatively about not being able to do these things. What do you think a moonshadow is? How does it follow someone?

I think Moonshadow is about it can also can be about how much he likes the shadow on the moon and how he feels about the shadow of the moon

Teacher...you really need to proofread as I don't understand the first part of your sentence. What makes you think he likes the shadow and does he feel about it?

I think that Cat Stevens is looking on the bright side of life. If he looses something its not a burden anymore.

Thank you Bugs. I really enjoyed writing about my personal connections. It's easy to talk about things that are meaningful to us, isn't it?

I think its about how when he almost drowned (as mr r said) and he believes that the shadow of the moon lifted him in a way and now if he is ever in danger he knows he is being followed by a moon shadow

Yes Cat Stevens has had quite an interesting life and he also had tuberculosis when he was 19. You should read about his life. I am sure overcoming illnesses and challenges force you to re-evaluate your life and great lyrics come out of these times. I love your thinking Trollfayce...and I can picture the image of him being lifted by a shadow of the moon. Maybe he could see the moon and it gave him strength.

I think that Cat Stevens thinks that the moon is protecting him from harm, because if you put the lyrics, I'm bein followed by a Moonshadow, into mind, the following of the Moonshadow could mean that the mom has his back or something.

Thanks Marilyn for the comments. If you go to Bugs comment, I gave some resources and information that should answer your question. The mythology source I read did not specify the authors but I confirmed the information on ancient gods with the encyclopedia. Also there are a number of reliable sites reporting the affect that the sun and moon have on the earth. Thanks for asking the question.
