Happy thought! Today we continued our discussion about the types and causes of poverty. We read and shared information about Canada's minimum wage, our child poverty level and suggestions on how we might change things. We are also learning how to support our opinions with reasons and details. POST: Watch the video clip below on the Canada - US border. What is your opinion about refugees crossing into Canada illegally? Be sure you support your opinion with an example or detail. Homework:

Remember you will be teaching others your special handshake tomorrow. Well this should be the end of our snow but be prepared for anything tomorrow morning. Today we handed in our scale art for grade 6 math and started our fraction unit. Grade 7s started integers. We have also been reviewing the difference between fact and opinion and learning how to include more details in order to make our writing more interesting. POST your opinion about the rule of no throwing snowballs this winter. Be sure to support your opinion with at least one example or detail. Here is our happy thought for the week. Homework:
None - but remember your math goal for the rest of this week and next week. If you didn't have a chance to reflect on Fresh grade for your 2nd perspective art or your term 2 write, you need to complete that. Reminders: Have a look for wheels and axles that you could bring to school for our next group challenge. Ask parents if they can drive this Friday as we need more drivers for our final curling from 12-1. We will leave at 11:30 and I'll ask if they can store hot lunch for us for when we return. We worked very hard today to complete our poverty definitions and examples of causes. Be prepared for your test at the end of next week by reviewing daily. We will look at some other factors of poverty next week. POST: We also had our buddy time between recess and lunch. Share some things that you learned about your buddy today. Also explain what you did to help your buddy. How did you show the leadership skills that we were discussing at our assembly on 'Right to Play' today. How did you "play your part"? We also learned how to ask more powerful questions in order to encourage deeper thinking especially when we are thinking about our reading. Most of you were asking more powerful questions. Monday we will see if you can think deeper and answer them. Reminders/Homework:
Comment on Fresh grade if you haven't assessed your math unit test performance. Curling is Friday, February 10th at 12-1. We leave at 11:30 and require more drivers. Please ask your parents if they can drive. Book orders - Monday Math - grade 6 Scale pencils drawings are due Monday. (do not colour yet) POST: Today we looked at types and causes of poverty. Most people living in poverty in BC already have at least one job. Is getting a job enough to eliminate poverty! What do you think? If getting jobs isn't enough, what is the answer? Reminders/Homework: Comment on Fresh grade if you haven't assessed your math unit test performance.
Book orders - Friday Math - grade 6 Scale pencils drawings are due Monday. (do not colour yet) ** Come tomorrow at 8 am if you still have overdue projects POST: We have read a powerful part in our novel 'Drums, Girls and Dangerous Pie' where Steven finds himself crying more than once. What do you think about the stereotypes and expectations that are sometimes put on both males and females? ie. boys need to be tough, they shouldn't show their emotions; girls should be 'girly', and its okay to be emotional. Where do you think these stereotypes have come from? How long have they been around? Do you think they are changing, can they be changed? Should they be changed? Some deep thinking on this topic tonight. We have also continued to learn about poverty and are taking notes on the types, causes and effects of poverty. We will continue this with our magazine resources tomorrow. You need to have specific examples and explanations recorded as you will only have your notes to study from when preparing for your unit test. Reminders/Homework:
French tomorrow Comment on Fresh grade if you haven't assessed your math unit test performance. Book orders - Friday ** Starting tomorrow, those students who still have overdue reading posters or perspective art, will stay in at lunch and either before/after school each day until done. Tomorrow I will be at school at 8 since there is bball after school. |
