Important Hello Division 2,
In the Moonshadow assignment post I've made, Ms. Wilson posted a reply where she gave a great example of what persuasive paragraphs can look like. In addition to the homework from this past Friday, I ask that everyone read her post and respond to it in the same thread. Thanks in advance and I hope you enjoy the rest of your wonderful weekend! Mr. R. Where would a community settle? This afternoon, we discussed some factors that determine where human settlements can occur. For example, we discussed how geography and weather can affect the decision of where we can have a human settlement. HomeworkWrite a persuasive paragraph convincing your reader of an appropriate location where you would create a settlement for a community. Your paragraph must have an opinion, and at least three reasons with a connecting evidence/detail supporting the reason. I will also look for quality and details. For example, - Is the opinion clearly stated? - Are the reasons clearly stated? - Is the evidence/details clearly stated and has a strong connection to the reason? - Can the evidence/detail be verified? Please include your real name at the end of your paragraph and email your paragraph to Mr. R. Thanks, Mr. R. HintsWhen deciding on the location of your settlement think of,
- the weather - the importance of good soil - how would you move from one place to another - water supply - food supply - materials for building technology What is the message from the song Moonshadow?Today in Language Arts, we practiced how we are able to recognize an opinion, reasons, and evidence/details supporting those reasons by doing an in-class activity. HomeworkThis afternoon, I gave you a handout to the lyrics of the song Moonshadow by Cat Stevens. Using the handout, I want you to write a persuasive paragaph telling me the message of the song. Your paragraph must have an opinion, and at least one reason with a connecting evidence/detail supporting the reason. I will also look for quality and details. For example, - Is the opinion clearly stated? - Is the reason or reasons clearly stated? - Is the evidence/details clearly stated and has a strong connection to the reason? - Can the evidence/detail be verified? - Sentence variety. Please include your real name at the end of your paragraph and email your paragraph to Mr. R. Thanks, Mr. R. Cat Stevens - Moonshadow Lyrics Oh, I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land, Oh if I ever lose my hands, Oh if.... I won't have to work no more. And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colours all run dry, Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Oh if.... I won't have to cry no more. Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow And if I ever lose my legs, I won't moan, and I won't beg, Yes if I ever lose my legs, Oh if.... I won't have to walk no more. And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south, Yes if I ever lose my mouth, Oh if.... I won't have to talk... Oh I'm bein' followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Leapin' and hoppin' on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light. Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night? Enjoy the beautiful spring weather we're having! Mr. R Language Arts - Practice with Discovering Someone's ArgumentThe Olympic torch can symbolize the Olympic games. When one holds the torch, it can mean they are responsible for hosting the Olympic games. In the image above, the Vancouver mascots are passiing the torch to the "Russian Bear" because Sochi, a city in Russia, will host the 2014 Olympics. Note that this caricature was drawn in the time after the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and before the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
Today, we discussed how to form an opinion (or argument), provide reasons to support your argument, and provide evidence to support your reasons. In the picture above, your homework is to write the illustrator's argument, a reason behind this argument, and detailed evidence supporting your reason. Remember, your evidence must be verifiable. That is, you must be able to show someone your details. You can use these two facts to help you with your response. 1. Canada is the country that won the most gold medals in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic games. 2. The Canadian Men's Hockey team defeated the Russian Men's Hockey team in the elimination round of the Olympic hockey tournament by a score of 7-3. |
